Ladies are welcome and may use the Club's facilities, with the exception of the public rooms on the ground floor designed for members and gentlemen guests.
Wives of members are encouraged to use the Club with their friends and do not need to be accompanied by their husbands when using the Club.
Luggage
Hand luggage, briefcases, coats and umbrellas
should be deposited in the Hall. Any item of particular importance may be
left with the Hall Porter. The Club shall not be liable to Members, their
guests or their servants in respect of any damage to, loss or destruction
of property occurring in the Club or caused by any Club servant.
Payment
All meals and drinks should be paid for at
the time of consumption. Bedroom accounts are payable when they reach £1,000
or on departure which ever is former. For the convenience of Members the following
credit cards are accepted in addition to cash, personal cheque, or debit card:
Mastercard, Visa, Diners, American Express,
however a 3% surcharge is made for the use of these cards.
Tipping
The rule is NO tipping with the exception of
the Valet. This rule has been rigorously observed in this and all other principal
London Clubs since their foundation. It is based on the principle of the equality
of Members and that the Club is to them an extension of their home.
The Club has a Staff Fund which is open all the year to receive such donations as Members and their visitors may wish to give - the proceeds are distributed by the Staff Fund Committee in December and July. Donations are dealt with by the Hall Porters.
Hall
Porters
The Hall Porters will be pleased to assist you and deal with telephone calls.
Messages will be left on the message board. The Hall Porters are also responsible
for bedroom bookings and the reservation of tables in the Wellington and Churchill
Dining Rooms. Reserved tables are held for 10 minutes only after the time
of reservation and thereafter rmay be reallocated.
A supply of postage stamps is kept at the desk and in any one day Members may cash cheques having a total value not exceeding £50.
Reciprocal
Clubs
The Club has reciprocal arrangements with other clubs around the world. Members
can obtain details and cards of introduction from the Secretary's Office.
Reciprocal arrangements are available during weekends for lunching and dining at the Royal Over-Seas League and the United Oxford & Cambridge Universities Club.
When the
Club is open
1.
Members and their guests should be appropriately dressed in the clubhouse.
In particular gentlemen are expected generally to wear, in the public rooms,
a jacket, collar and tie or the uniform or costume appropriate to their office
or vocation or recognised national dress. A lounge suit is preferable, but
a tailored jacket, which includes blazer or sports jacket, is acceptable.
Ladies are expected to wear the appropriate equivalent, which may include
tailored trousers. Jeans and their close relations, leggings, jodhpur-style
trousers, T-shirts, tracksuits, training shoes, denim clothing or other sportswear
are not acceptable in the public rooms at any time.
When
the bedrooms are open but the Club is otherwise closed
2.
On days when the Club is closed, jackets and ties are no longer obligatory
and the dress code is relaxed.
Breakfast
3.
Normal rules apply but smart casual clothing is acceptable at breakfast.
Hot
Weather
4.
In exceptionally hot weather the Secretary, or in his absence the senior member
of staff on duty, may allow gentlemen to remove their jackets in the Wellington
Room only.
Coats,
Hats, etc
5.
Members and their guests are required to remove outer street garments before
entering the public rooms of the clubhouse and must deposit their hats, coats,
briefcases, parcels, shopping bags, etc in the appropriate ladies’ or
gentlemen’s cloakrooms. Ladies may continue to wear their hats indoors
and, naturally, may retain their handbags. Any items left unattended may be
removed to the cloakroom.
Conclusion
6.
Notwithstanding the above, the Secretary, or in his absence the senior member
of staff on duty, may require any Member or guest to leave the Club who is
not, in their opinion, dressed in accordance with acceptable standards.
7.
Members are responsible for ensuring that their guests are aware of the dress
standards.
